The Melody Festival 2021 🇸🇪

Here in Sweden we are a bit crazy about the Eurovision Song Contest, because we have in total 6 shows where we select our winner of the year – and this year was no different! Maybe you can divide our nation into two parties; those who follow every show and love Eurovision, and those who don’t. In our family, it’s kind of a tradition to watch it and there’s not much to watch on TV anyway so why not?

So today was the final show, where we (finally) decided which song to send to Eurovision! I was kind of convinced (or at least hoping) of that one particular artist would win, and I was right! I really like this song. But I wonder how this year’s Eurovision will be like because of Corona? 😣

New books! 📚

Every February (?) the annual book sale in Sweden starts. Even though I’m not the type who buys all the newest and hottest books, there are a few that might interest me and this time it was Hudbibeln (The Skin Bible) by Johanna Gillbro – simply a book about our skin! It sounded super interesting, and I bet there’s a lot of stuff for to me to learn.

And as usual, Murakami books because I love his books. Then, I finally found the paperback edition of Jackie by Anne Swärd, I’ve been waiting for months! Can’t wait to read all of these! Right now I’m on the last chapters of book number 4 in the Earth’s Children series, but who says you can’t read two books (or more) at once? 😎

Last Christmas I received those DNA test kits from 23andme, from a friend! I’ve been long thinking of doing this in the future, so I was so happy to finally get to do it! Anyway, early this morning I finally received my results and it’s so cool. No real surprises, except for the Eastern European part where I got 2,1%? 😮Anyway, I’m almost 100% Scandinavian and it’s mostly from Denmark (I had no idea I’m so Danish!) and Southern Sweden/Skåne! 🇩🇰🇸🇪

I spent several hours just reading about my ancestry report, DNA relatives and traits – you’re given so much information it’s just fascinating…

Fat Tuesday

In Sweden, we have many days were we celebrate different food. For example the Fat Tueday (Fettisdagen), is when we eat a semla (below), and this year we celebrate it the 16th of February. A few decades ago, if you wanted to upset the Swedes you would eat a semla weeks before the actual date (just like I did yesterday). There were even people who wanted to forbid bakeries to sell these buns before the actual date it was celebrated (the date changes every year)! It still upsets some today… But I just cannot help myself (like most people, I guess).

Anyway, the semla is simply a bun with whipped cream and almond paste. January isn’t over yet but I’ve already managed to eat three of these. You can’t stop me.

A semla my mum made.

Loved songs 🎵

I try to discover new music all the time, and I often succeed even though I’m quite picky! And sometimes, you find really a lot!

My book year of 2020 📚

I read a total of 10 books last year; almost one book per month! I started the year with reading the last book of the 1Q84 triology (Haruki Murakami), a story that I loved so much! Another book I really loved is Jo Marchant’s Cure: A Journey into the Science of Mind Over Body, it was so well written and so so so interesting! I really recommend this book, by the way. And then, I finally started reading the Earth’s Children books by Jean M. Auel. Actually, the second and third book of this series (there are six in total) have been standing in my parents’ bookshelf since the 80s but haven’t been read since now! So, I asked my mum about those books, and she said she also wanted to start reading them but that we had to get a hold of the first book (The Clan of the Cave Bear) for starters. So we did, and we found them all on second hand! Anyway – wow – I love these books so much! It’s just such a great story… Right now, I’m on the third book but my mum has already finished the entire series, lol.

Below is the total list (in order after date of completion) + my rating.

  • 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami (5/5)
  • The Vegetarian by Han Kang (4/5)
  • The Perfume by Patrik Süskind (4/5)
  • Cure: A Journey into the Science of Mind Over Body by Jo Marchant (5/5)
  • Fat Chance by Robert H. Lustig (3/5)
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (4/5)
  • Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman (3/5)
  • The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel (5/5)
  • The Valley of Horses by Jean M. Auel (5/5)
  • The Mammoth Hunters by Jean M. Auel (5/5)

Bye bye snow

And so, the snow down here in Scania is gone again. Meanwhile, it’s a total chaos of snow up in the North of Sweden. But here, it rained for almost a day and today we woke up to full sunlight and even spring feelings. But… I love snow! So here’s a panorama I took last week because it’s so beautiful. And a gif! ❄️
